How silly. Any description of a person is considered a judgment now? In both the 2013 movie and in the novel, he says there’s a limit to his tolerance. Was Nick supposed to give Tom a pass? Then he’d be betraying Gatsby. Tom is a despicable person and he’s meant to be. And ultimately, Daisy’s favorite person is herself.

For more than 10 years I can't find, nor do I have one person in my life that enjoys the novel or any of the films. The 1975 film was the first I watched (religiously), then the 2013 film (which became my favorite). Almost everyone I asked thinks the novel is High School reading, and little else (females especially). After watching this analysis I think, WTF? There's so much depth to the novel & films (despite the flaws). Why aren't there more people who realize how great this novel is?

It's possible for one person to not know or meet few who like smthg despite popularity. Take Batman, for instance - popular and yet countless amounts of Americans & others do not like him or the medium the character is within. America is popular, been around for hundreds years & is hated by many, many people all over the world. Grow up, start traveling, and meet people outside your tiny circle. Have sex with various amounts of women from different countries - many dislike American (even if they live in it) and don't like The Great Gatsby or The Batman. Cheers "old sport" 🍸

I have the 2013 version memorized. It’s so visually stunning and totally reflects the excessive opulence of the 1920s and anybody who doesn’t understand it has never seen a Baz Lurhmann movie ever. I love the costumes, everything. The movie needs to be beautiful visually because the story isn’t compelling. Fitzgerald spent way too much time on words that said nothing, descriptions that meant nothing, and seven chapters of exposition. Who cares about Jordan and Nick’s relationship, really? I want to know how Gatsby met and became involved with Wolfshiem. Why was Tom in Louisville? How did Gatsby find Daisy? If Nick was affluent, why was he living in an $80/month cardboard box? I read the book multiple times, as recently as April, and I still don’t know. The book is only around 180 pages (editions vary) but it could’ve been a lot longer if Fitzgerald included relevant information. But it could’ve been a lot shorter if he just left out all the BS.

@@unicornhearts you and I are on the same page. 2013 film is stunning, and visually fantastic. For the novel (read a few times) I agree with most of what you say. Gatsby is the American dream come true, then tragically destroyed by his personal ambition & class prejudice.

It is right up there in the pantheons of the BEST TELEVISION EVER MADE. Nearly every episode brings a tear, and all bring a very profound lesson.i am a Brit, an old male Brit, I rank the BBC as one of our most important creations, and over the years I have been educated and informed to such a degree that I am wiser for it…… but Bluey stunned me! When I first watched “the sign” I missed much of the episode consumed by fear that this was a final episode and there would be no more (safe to say I’ve seen it again, and again) this program will be talked about for decades to come. And I have more hope than I used to, that the coming generations may live up to my ancestors standards. Bravo Australia, bravo.🫡

funnily enough, when we were analyzing this book just a few months ago in english class, the teacher COMPLETELY glossed over nick's character to focus more on gatsby, daisy, myrtle, and george i was completely unaware that nick and jordan were even in a relationship by the time i got to chapter 4 hell, when we first started, the teacher completely skipped an entire chunk of chapter 1 because it focused too much on nick, and i'm under the belief she referenced the 2013 film several times because it focuses more on gatsby's character i'm glad this video gave me more insight on nick and why i personally felt he was a really secluded and silent but bitter person throughout the book despite all that was glossed over, he ended up being one of my favorite characters and i appreciate the added context

Its written with a word today we don't say - but if you really watch movies and understand them - they are telling the same story but it's on film and they don't have to say the words - look at cold mountain for example - this has nothing to do with race - it's the idea of words are translated in films by just playing out what happens - the same people who want to ban this book (go back as far as field of dream in terms of cinema- and look at the author that plays a big role in it) these people today want this to be banned because its reinventing history to meet corporate commercial culture - a culture of fake squeaky clean stuff I despise - I'm so sick of censorship - both sides of the isle do it - but .. I understand the differences and - i feel almost like I have to say that - my channel revolves around a game where they inaccurately portray history - and in efforts to not come off as racially motivated I have to spend 80% of my time making sure I don't blast someone who isn't the right appearance - in the game its worse - you get penalized based on things like what people look like - which is .. racist .. we live in a dumbed down world where we surrender intellectual interpretation of past events and discussions to corporations made up of people who probably offend worse than any other - but make sure they proclaim they are virtuous so they can squeeze the little companies and suck the money out of our pockets using moral virtue. It's refreshing to hear some substantive discussion on such a unnecessarily sensitive and censored or fictionally re-created subject. Look what google tried to do with the launch of their AI tool .. This video is probably more relevant than ever - and it makes me so angry to be someone totally void of prejudice and so focused on substance to HAVE to support and work for companies that want it the dumb way- so they can make more $$ - and many distorting the focus of what we should be collectively discussing for the political (no sides here) utility of stoking and fueling the idea and existence of racism - It's so sad we can't tell a story from the time it happened in - nobody had a problem with HBO/CBC's early 2000s ROME, but we demand that more recent history conform to today's standards - I leave you with this one last though --- why is HBO's Deadwood regarded as one of the greatest series ever released - and how much different (if it all) is it from Twain's writings?

I’m writing this while watching the video, but I have to say: brilliant analysis here. Refreshing. For one, I think it’s fair to say there’s an integral dimension to Shakespeare that happens between the text, not within it. So any adaptation should consider not merely how to interpret and frame the text, but how to portray what happens outside and between it. Macbeth 2015 is my favorite adaptation, by FAR, for how it frames and contextualizes the text, and what it does to interpret what’s not in the text. You speak to this so well in your analysis of the film’s portrayal of violence, its emphasis on grief and trauma, and the importance of children. My favorite thing about this adaptation is its interpretation of the character of Macbeth. How he’s so haunted, regretful, grief-ridden, and, ultimately, how he embraces his fate rather than fighting against it. Many lines throughout the play imply his desire for death, yet I rarely see this embraced in adaptations or performances.

Theres something about the long time actor Denzel giving Macbeth an experience feeling to Macbeth youd almost think his ambition isnt outstripping his ability to do so. But that in a way makes the veteran officer part of his character hammer home the drastic means he falls into to keep the crown more assured as Macbeth would have been knee deep in blood from many battles that he could be desensitized to such violence.

The implied(?) unintended (?) message of the book and the film is a falsification of Christ teaching .Our Saviour never praised apostasy -under any circumstances. The apostasy veiled in compassion serves to create a caricature of Christianity - as mistaken stubborn, irrational ideology, caricature eagerly welcomed nowadays by left oriented audience. It is no surprise therefore that while Christian culture is now conveniently ignored - this particular movie is ...somehow not:) It serves well to dilute and perfidiously distort what the core of Christianity is - fidelity to Christ. By apostatising the priest simply sinned -and turned his life into vegetative state. Those who were responsible for tortures were those who inflicted them -not the missionaries .
